Choosing the Right Size -
1.5 inch or 2 inch diameter? Or
?---This depends on the sound you want as well as your ability. I
personally like the 2 inch because it sounds fuller. However, if you
are a beginer and especially if you are trying to learn circular
breathing my vote would be that you use the 1.5 inch stuff. The 1.5
inch stuff is also 'buzzier' and much more lively (easy to play quicker
rhythms). I have also made didjs from 3 inch diameter pipe. The taper
is much more radical with this and they tend to require more air flow,
but boy do they 'boom'.
The length is also something you will need to consider. Once again
dependant on the sound you want and your ability as a player. As a
beginner I would probably stick to something in the 40 to 48 inch
range. If you are shooting for a particular note please see
Matt Newby's guide to making your own PVC didjeridu.
. Matt has a table that will help you determine the length required for a particular note.
So you must choose what you are going after and make the appropriate decision from there.
