Multi-instrumentalist Mohamed adds Zimbabwean mbira, Senegambian kora and even Australian didgeridoo to his township jazz sound. The effect is both haunting and hopeful, especially on the euphoric "Mbira Jive" and the bracing "Cup O' Jo (Burg)," featuring the stirring sax of Hugh Masekela sideman Morris Goldberg. Mohamed has obviously benefited from a residency in New York, and it's paid off in his willingness to mix it up. Although a veteran, he sounds like one of the brave young turks of township jazz.
